I normally don't post about stuff that's happening in the news, but I think I will make an exception for this. Over the past couple days (starting on Thursday, June 20), southern Alberta was hit extremely hard with huge amounts of rain (150 mm in 24 h in the foothills of the Rockies, and 50 mm in 24 h in Calgary itself). The result of this massive influx of water was that the various creeks and rivers that make up the Bow River Basin overflowed, and destruction to any community that lined their banks resulted. The hardest hit community was High River (aptly named), where flood waters covered the main street of the city so high that vehicles were submerged. Just today, there was confirmation of 3 deaths in this small community. So incredibly sad. Another terribly hit community was Canmore, where the raging waters of Cougar Creek literally tore houses off of their foundations. Highway 1 goes through this small town, and was shut down in both directions.
Calgary itself was hit pretty hard, as all of the communities in low-lying areas along the Bow and Elbow rivers underwent mandatory evacuations. I believe roughly 6 families from Truth Church were affected, the hardest hit being the Deman family. The pictures on Instagram showed the Deman boys canoeing to their back porch in order to salvage as many items as they could. It will be a number of days before they will even be allowed back into their house, and when they do go back to their house, there will be a TON of work to do. Definitely praying for all those that have been affected by this tragedy.
